It's convenient to connect to a printer (or 2-3) printers so that you don't have to search for a printer everytime you print from a machine.
Connections to printers are only "good" for the login from which they were made. This means you'll want to teach your 2nd-5th grade students how to do this and assign them to a computer/laptop so that they won't have to do it continually throughout the year.
You can generally get a good idea of what the problem is by looking at the display on the control panel of the printer and/or looking up the printer on the network.
Jams need to be cleared. (If you aren't sure of what you are doing, though, please don't get too aggressive in doing this.)
If a printer needs a new cartridge, contact the financial clerk to see if one if available, or if one needs to be purchased.
No, a color printer will NOT work if only one cartridge needs replaced. They have to ALL be functional.
If there's a huge document in the queue and nothing is printing, it could be that document is just too big and the job needs to be deleted. The sender and/or the ITF and a few other people on campus can generally do this.
If the printer appears to be "offline", you can try powering it off, then restarting it.
Next -- call tech support. If you tell them the exact name and model of the printer, they may try to walk you through a "cold reset" and/or ask you to print a "config sheet". If that isn't the case, then you'll need to wait for a field engineer to check it.
Please don't just walk away without reporting the problem! If you have contacted tech support, leave a note so that others know it's been reported.
